New York City Moving Guide

Moving is difficult that’s for sure because it means change. Change is always difficult no matter what we are talking about. We get attached to things easily and when we have to let something go we usually can’t do it as easily. To feel at home is something all of us strive for and thus work hard to build a home. Hence when we have to relocate our home we shiver only at the though of it. Whether you own a home or rent a place, you get used it and a transition to a new location means discomfort and a chaos. Now imagine moving to New York! Moving to “the city that never sleeps” is quite a challenge. There is a lot to be considered and researched before moving to New York.

First things First …. New York City Cost of Living!

If you are moving to NYC, from anywhere in the country (except San Francisco may be), be prepared for a shock. The cost of living in New York is very high. Depending on your salary of course, you may not feel it that much. But the overall cost of living is high. The city and state taxes are high, the housing prices are high, the cost of food is high and parking in Manhattan is expensive (though Chicago now tops the parking taxes). Thus, research all aspects of living in New York City before moving and definitely find a job first.

Job Hunting in NYC – Competitive!

Moving to a new city without a job would be difficult, whether it is New York or any other city in the US. You may even have to make a pre-move trip for a job interview and hunting. Do it! Even if you have to go over your budget, do it anyway. In today’s economy securing a job is the single most important thing when moving. Moving to New York means tons of expenses from the minute you set foot in the city. If you don’t have a job to keep you afloat, or good amount of cash in your packets, you will soon find yourself regretting the decision to move to NYC. Thus, get on this first and check websites like Indeed New York and Craigslist New York  if you haven’t gotten your offer yet.

Next – Apartment hunting in New York

Apartment hunting in NYC could be a bit intimidating. Housing will be your biggest expense in New York, thus you have to carefully consider your options. The prices vary greatly by neighborhood as the most expensive areas are in Manhattan of course. For one bedroom expect to pay somewhere between $2000 and $2500 rent a month, and up for two bedroom. Second biggest expense after housing is probably parking. As much as you may be used to having a car, moving to New York you will most likely have to get rid of it. The monthly fees for garage start from $400 and if you have extra cash you can certainly enjoy the luxury.

New York City Public Transportation – Use it!

Moving to New York could be a big change, but quality movers can help you!

When you move to New York, you will most likely sell your car. Thus, your next most convenient option to get around the city is public transportation. Although you will enjoy closeness of grocery stores, coffee shops and the like, you will need transportation to work. It would be best if your new home is located by the same bus or subway line that takes you straight to work. The subway pay-per-ride fare is $2.25, but NYC public transpiration offers variety of passes.

Moving to New York – New York Movers

When you get close to the time to schedule your move to NYC, you will have to contact a few New York movers. Moving can be challenging and in order to have a successful relocation you need to consider a few things. Sure the moving cost will be your biggest concern, but don’t choose a mover because of the low estimate. Get a few moving quotes, check movers references and affiliations and then talk to them before you decide.

New York is not like any other city. Traffic is non stop, parking can be intimidating and you have to hire experienced movers to do the job. There are parking permits that reliable movers will take care of instead of you.  Consider New York movers who have years of experience and whose moving agents give you all the details about a move to New York City.

Reserve an elevator. In order for the movers to do their job efficiently you have to reserve your building elevator in advance and accordingly to the delivery time frame. Make sure you stay in touch with your movers, especially if moving long distance. Most buildings in NYC require the moving company to provide certificate of insurance in case any damages occur during the moving. Make sure the movers have sent you that before the moving has started.

New York City moving cost can be higher compare to other cities. New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world, so it is no surprise that the moving cost will also be high. However, the cost will depend on the type of your move. If you are moving locally the movers will charge by the hour and by the weight or cubic feet if moving cross country. There is usually a minimum amount you have to pay whether moving locally or long distance. Ask your movers about that. Some moving companies offer flat rates for popular destinations. Such are Boston to New York or Chicago to New York. Many movers travel these routes often and that’s why they have established flat rate fees to accommodate customers moving in that direction.

Have a safe move to The City That Never Sleeps! if you need more tips on how to choose a reliable moving company browse through this blog to find a lot of useful information. Be sure you hire quality New York Movers who will make the process stress free because the mere thought of moving to NYC could be stressful enough.

Moving To Boston Guide

Boston has unique architecture and European spirit!

Moving to Boston – the city of schools? Here is what to expect!

Relocating to a new city is always exciting, but a little scary as well. A change in our life and routine could be quite stressful and intimidating. Statistics say that moving is the second most stressful experience in life after divorce. It turns your world up side down and the whole order that kept us going disappears. Thus, an organized and professional moving will help you stay sane during this stressful time in your life. Consider hiring professional relocation company that will save you time and in many cases money.

Moving is not easy, and therefore not cheap for sure, but there are always ways to save on moving expenses. Moreover, in some cities moving labor is more expensive than others so you have to make your research and then compare moving companies’ rates and services. Boston has higher living standard and hence higher moving rates. This is of course in comparison to for example Chicago, Los Angeles, Cincinnati and other smaller cities. The more expansive the city the higher the labor cost. Of course there are more factors effecting the cot of moving and in Boston such is the fact that the city is one of the oldest in the US. This often creates inconveniences when maneuvering in the downtown area. However, this is just a little issue because experienced Boston movers will have no problem with this. The fact is that moving in general doesn’t come cheap. If you want to preserve your household or office goods, do not ever consider the cheapest movers because often they are not the most reliable.

Moving To Boston – Cost of Living

If you are moving to Boston from New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco Boston will somehow look less expansive. Yet, compare to other major cities in the US, Boston is more expensive. If you are moving from Chicago to Boston, you may be shocked by the higher cost of living. However, depending on the type of your job, a higher salary will compensate the higher prices.

Housing

The first shocker will be the cost of homes and apartments. Whether you are buying or renting, the cost are quite steep, yet there is a wide range of sizes and styles in Boston. As most of us know, Boston is one of the most European cities in the US and you can find great European style buildings. You can find everything from the typical 4 story, brown bricks buildings to variety of modern high rises in and around downtown area. Boston architects can definitely successfully compete with Chicago and the rest of the country.

State and City Taxes

This is the first aspect to consider when talking about cost of living. The state and city taxes, along with the income tax, are what will affect the cost. Massachusetts is one of those states that have a single rate throughout the state. The sales tax is 6.25 %, however, the city can tax additionally which is what drives the cost high in many states across the US. The city can add additional 2.00 or more percent, which makes Massachusetts one of the most expensive states in New England. New York tops all of course.

Average Salary in Boston

The average salary in Boston is among the highest in the country. Considering the fact that Boston has the highest concentration of universities in the US, it is not no wonder it has the highest paying job concentration as well. The average salary in Boston is close to $80.000, but based on your occupation it could be $90.000.

Captivating sunsets can be seen all over Boston area!

Boston –  Entertained and Culturally Enriched!

So far we’ve covered some of the most important parts of living in Boston. Yet there are other aspects of living in Boston that deserve mentioning. Boston has its fair share of entertaining its citizens. In fact Boston has rich history and amazing nightlife. There are numbers of museums and art galleries, as well us cafes and night clubs. It also offers great beaches for summer relaxation and fun around the city. The weather can be quite unpredictable in New England thus most tourism happens in the summer. Summer tends to be nice but varies each year. Fall season though offers even better conditions for tourism and just enjoying the beauty of the city and the nature. Thus, moving to Boston you should know that this city is rich in history and city management support development of all aspects in order to satisfy citizens of all ages and walks of life.

Reliable Boston Moving Services – how to find them?

Now that you have decided to move to Boston, you will need professional movers to help you do the shift. Just like when searching for a job and a new home in Boston, you will have to put some effort and find reliable Boston movers. Moving is not easy and doesn’t come cheap. If you get quality and prompt service you have to consider quality and prompt movers. How to find reliable Boston movers? Well, good movers are everywhere you just need to verify that and there are ways. First, find some local to you movers and then some Boston movers and get a few quotes. When you start talking to the moving companies first thing you should consider is the way the consultant is talking to you. Follow if the moving agent is giving you all the information you need and asks is you have any questions. Then, ask how long the company has been operating and request referrals. Contact the referrals because this will definitely give you an insight of the mover operates. Another thing you can do is read moving reviews on the various customers rating boards. Price is never the factor deciding in favor. Do not ever go for the cheapest option because those are usually rogue movers. Try to avoid moving scam by not hiring the most affordable movers because this never means the best quality moving service. Boston movers are quite popular with offering quality moving and storage services across the nation. Thus, consider a few Boston moving companies and choose wisely. Think about your moving needs and requirements and pick those Boston movers who can match your criteria.

Let us know if you have any question on how to find reliable Boston movers or would like to add anything about living in Boston. Good luck!

E-Z Movers Supports Chicago Pride Parade

Chicago Pride Parade celebrates and demostrates the change for LGBT people around the world!

Pride Parade is celebrated around the world. LGBT groups have existed for decades, but the modern day movement can be traced back to 1969 and for the last four decades liberation groups have started organizing demonstrations and events to celebrate LGBT rights. Chicago Pride Parade is one of those world events bringing together people from all walks of life and connecting them with people around the world. E-Z Movers team and fleet of pink trucks stepped in to support LGBT rights and celebrate the accomplishments and dramatic change achieved by LGBT organizations around the world in the last decades. This year in June, Chicago celebrated “Pride Around The World,” Chicago’s 42nd Annual Pride Parade and E-Z Movers was Proud to support the event for a third consecutive year.

Peace Fest Chicago – E-Z Movers made it easier in 2011!

Peace Fest Chicago was all ages event in downtown Chicago and E-Z Movers was a proud sponsor.

Just like Pride Parade celebrates LGBT pride, peace is celebrated around the world with Peace Fests. Musicians sing about peace, humanitarians talk about peace, celebrities donate for peace, politicians debate about peace (don’t do much though) and global cities organize peace fests so all of us can participate in the global movement for peace. Chicago Peace Fest is one of those events picking up steam as we all see the burning need to promote peace around the world. And thus E-Z Movers joined the movement by sponsoring the organizers of Chicago Peace Fest. We are proud to support such an important and fun event and thus become part of the global movement for peace.

Moving Hearts, Not Just Houses

Marry Christmas from E-Z Movers

Every move E-Z Movers makes has inherited change in it. We just help with the physical transition. And that is what usually people ask from us. It happens that we do not truly understand each change and its bearer, thus the moving experience sometimes can be seen as less personalized attention. And we always tell our customers, it is nothing personal, we do want to be your friend and help you move, but we cannot ask too many personal questions. Then, we make so many moves and work with so many different types of people that often the standard approach is the best. Yet we understand that moving to a new home, new city or state is a huge step in many people’s lives. And we do what it takes to help them move.

“Often people are moving their hearts, while we are moving their houses.”

We at E-Z Movers very well know that this is part of life today. In 2011 we moved thousands of families and we saw that life has never been more mobile than it is today. Change is part of life, but in order to change people say you have to let go of some old gears (and fears) and move on. Take the chance and take the charge. E-Z Movers can help you if you need, but it is all in your hands. Start dreaming and start now! Christmas is the time to believe in miracles people say, but we would suggest it is the time to believe in you. You can create miracles because the sheer fact that you get up every morning to go to work, school or to take care of your children proves you are capable of creating. Respect the traditions and believes of Christmas, but remember that traditions are not what they were. Remember those miracles happen if we want them to happen, but most importantly if we work for them. Nothing is granted in life. Life itself was not granted to us. Someone wanted us to be here, on this earth – your mom and dad for example – and they worked for that.

To move on..let yoursefl be found.

Have a Marry Little …Holyday!

Allow yourself to have a holyday, but don’t assume that Christmas miracles happen. Enjoy the flow of life, but take control. That’s how EZ Does it! We know the flow, but we always take control and charge of our actions. Don’t take that about Christmas talk wrong though. We are not trying here to devalue the magic of Christmas. We are just being realistic. That is what we tell our customers – we understand it is complex and it will cost you something, but you know you have to move. The time of moving in life is the time of giving and taking. You are giving up something, but that way you are also taking the future in your hands. In the Bible it is said,

“Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find.”

We would like to say, it simply means that you have to take action and thus only you will move on. EZ Does it! We take actions and this is how we move you across the street or across the country. The same applies for everything in life. Whether it is a relationship you have to end or a new job you need to seek. If you want to be happy and move on, you have to let go of the person and let yourself be found by the new one. It is the smallest action, to let yourself be found, but it still requires you to act. The letting go often is the hardest part, but then times heals everything. If you are not content with your current job, start seeking a new one. We know it is not easy in this economy, but there is a way. You may have to get some new qualification, obtain a certificate, take a class, but you can do it. It is all about taking the charge and acting. This is how you move. Life is impermanence and we can’t be truly happy if we don’t realize that and learn to keep moving. EZ Does it!

Moving is about seeing the light in the end of the tunnel, even when it's out of sight.

We wish you to keep moving and find your happiness because it is out there waiting!

Going Through Culture Shock?

What is culture shock? According to Dr. Carmen Guanipa from San Diego State University the term was first introduced in 1958 and was described as “anxiety produced when a person moves to a completely new environment.” There is surely more into that than just anxiety. Many will feel disoriented in terms of not knowing what to do in certain situations, which will surely bring physical and psychological discomfort. It will take time to define what is normal and get used to the new norms. Often the biggest barrier is not speaking the language which causes tons of inconveniences in everyday life and basically prevents many from being who they are. Not being you can affect people’s emotional and physical health. Thus, it is important to stay focused and not let yourself be overtaken by emotions and fear of the new culture.

Culture shock means that you are not acting yourself because you are being prevented to be you! Yet there are ways to cope with that and it takes time.

How to cope with culture shock?

You can’t avoid culture shock when moving to a different country, but there are certainly ways to cope with it. Some handle the shock better than others and yet at some point it does affect all expats. As we said, it depends on your personality and on who you are relocating with to the new country. Whenever a whole family is moving to a different country, it will be definitely easier for each family member to adjust to the new culture. Support from the family always helps expats cope with culture shock. If you are “out in the wild” alone though, you will have to work harder, put on a smile and learn how to cope with the new culture.

Here are some suggestions on how to fight the stress produced by culture shock:

  • Do not try too hard and have patience! It will take time to adjust to the new culture and to start feeling comfortable.
  • Don’t be afraid to be yourself and show your willingness to learn. Smile and respond to all situations the way you think appropriate.
  • If you don’t speak the language, start learning main phrases and helpful words. Sigh up for a language class at the local school, library or church.
  • Go out and explore your new environment. Meet locals and explore your immediate surroundings. It will make you feel more comfortable immediately.
  • Try to continue with some regular activities you like and were part of your routine back in your home country. This will bring the so desired moments of relieve from loneliness, especially when you get homesick.
  • Find a new hobby. You will be surprised how many new things you will find in the new culture that excite you and can start exploring. This type of constructive exploring will benefit you as a person and it will help your settling in the new culture.
  • Maintain contact with your friends and family. Tell them about the new culture and about the new things you have to learn and deal with every day. This will give you sense of achievement and confidence.
  • At some point you can set goals and start monitoring your progress. Be patient and accept that the road to success will be longer and harder than it would be in your home country. Try to stay focused on the big picture and follow your plans for the future. Don’t get lost in the daily inconveniences and the moods they trigger.
  • Last, but not least, let yourself be nostalgic. Don’t try to escape the feeling of sadness about the things you left behind. It is normal to get depressed at moments and allowing yourself the time to think about it will help you cope with the culture shock and nostalgia.

Culture shock can hit hard, but allow yourself to go beyond the initial reaction.

Obviously, there is a lot to deal with when moving to a different country. However, there are also many ways to cope with the relocation and the initial stress of the culture shock. Take the time to adjust and follow some of the above these basic steps about how to cope with the culture shock. Expect more on the topic soon and please feel free to share your story.

Moving Abroad Guide

Moving to a different country could be the best thing you've ever done in your life!

Moving to a different country may sound scary to many of us, yet today more than ever before many take upon the challenge to move to a foreign country. You should not be afraid and remember that it is very much like when you move up from middle to high school – building, people, teachers, chairs, desks, generally familiar subjects and objects, yet everything is new. Every time we embark on a new challenge we fear the unknown we will face, and moving abroad is much like a jump into an abyss many would say. However, there are a few major steps you can take before moving out of the country so it doesn’t feel like falling down, but lifting up. Just like for any other move, you will need your moving abroad checklist. Planning is required for any type of moving, and it is even a must when moving abroad.

Steps To Consider When Moving Abroad

Decide Where You Want to Move Abroad – Continent and Country

First things first people say! Choose your destinations carefully. Why do you want to move? What do you want to do? Do you know somebody there who can help you get started? Is it considered or you are just bored? No matter the reason though, choose your new home carefully.

What do you know about the country? Learn more, never stop learning!

Learn more about the customs and culture of the chosen country. To learn the language is even more important. If the spoken language is foreign to you it may be difficult to get settled. Make sure you take some beginners lessons if that’s the case. This will help you adapt easily and prevent a culture shock. Adaptation through education!

When moving to a different country check for off peak season dates when tickets are cheaper!

Visit the country before moving abroad!

Go on a holiday and spend at least a week in the country you have chosen. Despite the abundance of information you can find online, reading and watching is not quite the as visiting. You have to see it with your eyes and feel it with your senses. When you get there (wherever that may be!) do not stick to the tourist areas. Get off track and mix with the locals to get the real feeling and understand what you will be getting yourself into. This will help you build your own moving abroad guide, but you can still get some moving tips.

Do research about the country and how to move abroad!

Do research before and after the visit. The research in advance will make your exploration smoother. You will start off with some knowledge, but do take everything with a grain of salt and once there trust your senses more. Seeing is believing people say, but to really see you will have to feel the place and the people, do not let yourself assume ( I will explain what assume means in another post!). Thus, get your hands on the job having being there read more, watch educational and exploration programs and talk to people.

Immigrating to a foreign country requires courage and free spirit!

To do while you are visiting the country

When you go abroad for vacation and to explore your future homeland you should visit the local authorities. Check in with the mayor’s office, immigration services if there are any in the city you have chosen and your embassy if there is one. If you can’t locate important authorities such as immigration office, go to the closest city where there is an office and get some information and forms first hand. Many developing countries still do not provide all information online, so you may have to go and visit in person. Your country’s embassy will be able to help you with the immigration process as well.

To be continued.

Let us know if you have any questions about immigration and moving abroad. Expect next article on that topic soon!

E-Z Movers Accepts The Mo Challenge

Movember Is Officially Here and E-Z Movers Mo team Is Kicking In!

People give for different reasons. In November E-Z Movers give to fight cancers that affect men! E-Z Movers team members (Mo Bros) took the challenge and will participate in this year Movember campaign.

What is Movember? Movember happens in November, and it is the time when men and women (Mo Bros and Mo Sistas) join efforts to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues – specifically cancers that affect men. How do we do that? In Movember, to become part of the initiative, men commit to grow a moustache and to focus on spreading awareness and raising funds for men’s health issues. E-Z Movers Mo team will grow their Moustaches during the month of November, 2011 and all the funds we raise will go to Movember.com. All funds raised for Movember USA, raised in the US go to LIVESTRONG Foundation and Prostate Cancer Foundation. check http://us.movember.com/about/ for more information.

Steve David, captain of E-Z Movers Movember Team & Campaign 2011

Mike Tae, E-Z Movers Movember Team and Movember Pictures 2011

Mike Tae, Team member E-Z Movers Movember Team2011

During the month of Movember we will encourage all our customers to sign up and start their own Mo campaign or become part of E-Z Movers Mo Team. Moreover, besides the fact that we will invite our customers to join the fight for men’s health in the month of Movember 2011, we will actually ask them to donate on the day of the move. For each local move we make in Chicago in November, 2011 we will match-donate up to $1.00. And, as one of the top ten Chicago Moving Companies we expect to make quite many  local moves in Chicago ! That’s not all E-Z Movers Mo team will do though! We will host great fundraising parties and invite friends, family and customers to join our effort to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues.

Why Is E-Z Movers joining the Movember Movement?

E-Z Movers’ motivation is simple. The moving industry is men driven and the men power is the main driving force. Thus, we stand behind our men (and women of course, but Movember is for men) and want to support this great cause that will help millions of men around the world get screened and treatment on time. This is huge because a new prostate cancer case is diagnosed every 2 min around the world; 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with that cancer in their lifetime, just like 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime! Occurrence of prostate cancer in men is entirely comparable to rates if breast cancer in women. We are just not aware of that statistics. However, the Movember movement has been picking up in the last two years, as men’s health is just as important as women’s. Further reason for the growing of the movement is because men are less likely to schedule a doctor’s appointment and stay in touch with the doctor, which prevents them from the chance of early detection and effective treatment thereafter. Thus, E-Z Movers Mo Bros and Mo Sistas will support the Movemebr movement and continuously work on raising awareness and funds throughout the month and the year.

Moving Guide Chicago

Chicago SKyline

Moving to Chicago will grant you with that view of Chicago from Lake Michigan!

Moving to Chicago will be more than moving to another city, it would be an adventure and challenge. Chicago metro area is the third largest in the US and one of the most diverse cities. This means that there is a lot for you to learn and choose from. You will need to familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods and choose the one that suits your lifestyle. You should research about cost of living in Chicago, taxes, schools and everything that would be applicable to your life. Chicago is an international city and you will see that as soon as you set foot there. There are great schools, the Great Lakes, beautiful skyline, career opportunities and more. Thus, if you are planning to relocate to Chicago you should start your research way in advance.

Chicago Moving Guide – Cost of Living

The cost of living is the first thing most of us consider when looking to relocate to another city. Chicago is not the most expensive, but not the cheapest city as well. If you are moving from New York or Boston to Chicago, looking at the big picture, you may find it more affordable. Yet the economic landscape in Chicago is changing every day so, you have to stay updated. Yesterday on Oct. 12, 2011, for example, the new Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel introduced his new city budget proposal that will increase city sticker fees, parking fees and water. Overall, the cost of living in Chicago is 12 percent greater than the national average.

Chicago Housing Market

When moving to a new city is important to research well the housing market. Whether you will be renting or buying, home prices and taxes will have an impact on the area you will move in to. Chicago has great variety of neighborhoods and all of them can offer distinct lifestyle. The north side of Chicago is way more expensive than most of south side and the western neighborhoods. More affordable renting you can find in the suburbs. The western suburbs offer more space for your money, and no additional fees for parking. The areas around O’Hare airport is divided into less expensive and more expensive suburbs (which is weird considering the fact that the planes don’t fly selectively only above some suburbs). Then, everything 50 or more miles away of Chicago is cheaper and quieter. When it comes to neighborhoods, you have to choose wisely. Young and urban people tend to go for the hip Bucktown, Lincoln Park, Lakeview and Wrigleyville. Still hip, but more mature place is the city of Evanston. Evanston is just north of Chicago Gold Coast and it’s a bit pricey. Downtown Chicago has a business district, Theater district and night clubs district. The home prices there are very expensive, but if you can afford it you will be extremely satisfied with the city life. Chicago area average home price varies greatly. It can be somewhere from $100,000 in some suburbs to $600,000 and above in downtown area.

Moving To Chicago – Chicago and Cook County Taxes

The taxes also vary depending on where you live. Chicago has the highest city, property, sales and hotel taxes. Cook County is the largest county in Illinois and since it is the most populated, it’s the most expensive. So, overall the Chicago metro area is more expensive than the rest of the state. Local sales will vary from 10 to 12 percent and 8 in the suburbs. It is one of the highest sales taxes in the country. Cook County property taxes are going up despite that homes values are down 30% – 40%. So, you can expect to pay around $6,000 for two bedroom two baths home.

Gas prices in Chicago are also one of the highest in the country. Now, they have fallen to an average of $3.50 per gallon, but still remain high. In the city of Chicago the average price is $3.75. Therefore, when moving to Chicago you should think of taking an advantage of Chicago public transportation. Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has a reasonable web of busses and trains. Chicago has 8 train lines  (called “The L” by Chicagoans) and around 200 bus lines. The CTA offer variety of passes and travel cards. If you are a student most colleges cooperate with the CTA to provide full time students with free passes. You can find more transportation about the CTA on their website   www.TransitChicago.com. One more asset to the public transportation in Chicago is the Metra Train System. The Metra has 11 rail roads that serve the entire Chicago metro area. It is a great convenience for those living in the more remote suburbs.
